Terry Russell has directed the Centre for Research in Primary Science and Technology since its inauguration in 1986 under Prof Wynne Harlen (with the generous support of the Gatsby Charitable Trust).  His background is in educational and developmental psychology, having worked as a primary teacher and educational psychologist.  His career as an educational researcher commenced in 1977 – initially at the Regional Centre for Science and Mathematics in Penang, Malaysia, then at King’s College, London from 1981-86, working with Paul Black and Wynne Harlen on the science team of the Assessment of Performance Unit.

CRIPSAT specialises in all aspects of primary science education, increasingly in the 5-14 age range, including research, evaluation, assessment, professional development and instructional design.  The centre’s work has included public understanding of science and has increasingly moved to embrace e-learning and e-assessment.

In addition to work in the UK, Terry’s earlier experience of development education in Southeast Asia has led him to maintain project activities in that area in the primary phase, as well as participating in and contributing to European networks of science education activity.
